about

Recorded by Ensemble Evolution with guests at Piteå Musikhögskolan, Sweden, February 2011.

Travel was written in response to my travels in Japan in 2008 and 2010. Both of these trips were defined by fascinating train journeys, between suburbs on metros and local trains and between cities and islands on the Shinkansen (bullet train). These journeys were filled with sounds: different chiming melodies for each station, announcements in half-understood Japanese and stilted English, the bustle of each station as the doors opened. I found the experience of constant motion and dipping into pockets of a rich and varied culture very inspirational, and completely addictive.

Originally composed in Australia in March 2010 as part of a generative, long form soundtrack for solo percussion and computer that I used with my multimedia group Last Man to Die, the current version was created in Piteå to perform with my colleagues in Ensemble Evolution.
